Anyone offering you a reading for Sun square Mercury is describing something that has never occurred in any chart ever cast. What the conjunction means is a different question, and traditional astrology has more to say about it than the modern texts usually pass on. The tradition grades the conjunction by distance. Within about 15 degrees Mercury is said to be under the beams; within about 8 and a half degrees, combust; and within 17 arcminutes of exact, cazimi, meaning in the heart of the Sun. Those first two were read as weakening and the last as a considerable strength.
