The first decan of Capricorn
The opening ten degrees of Capricorn, beginning at the winter solstice, and the most purely Saturnian stretch of the sign.
The technical picture
- Degrees
- 0 to 10 degrees of Capricorn
- Sun here roughly
- December 21 to December 31. The boundary shifts by about a day with the leap cycle, so a birthday within a day of either end needs a calculated chart.
- Sign ruler
- Saturn, over all three decans
- Traditional face ruler
- Jupiter, from the Chaldean order
- Modern triplicity ruler
- Saturn, by way of Capricorn
- Do they agree
- No. The two traditions disagree here, as they do on twenty-seven of the thirty-six decans.
The core of this decan
Capricorn begins at the winter solstice, the year at its darkest and just turning. Everything here starts from the bottom. Planets here are serious, patient and unusually self-directed. The approach is structural: work out what has to be true for the thing to stand, then build that, in order, without much interest in whether anyone is watching.
How it differs from the rest of the sign
Capricorn's three decans build different things. This one builds the structure itself. The second brings Taurus in and the building turns toward what is tangible and worth having; the third brings Virgo and it turns toward refinement and craft. Here it is the frame. The first decan of Capricorn is the most austere of the three and the least interested in the reward at the end.
The two rulers
The older scheme lightens this decan a good deal. Modern practice gives these degrees to Saturn, the sign's own ruler, which is exactly what everything above describes. The face system gives them to Jupiter, which is Saturn's opposite in temperament. That Jupiter is worth recovering: it suggests the discipline is in service of something expansive, and it accounts for the ambition here being about scale as often as it is about security.
Where the friction is
Building from the bottom takes a long time and this decan will not shorten it. Planets here can defer so consistently that deferral becomes the habit rather than the plan, and the arrival, when it comes, lands on somebody who has forgotten what it was for. Worth gets attached to output early. Rest starts needing to be earned, and it stays that way unless something interrupts it.
Working with it
Name what the work is for and check the answer out loud once a year, because this decan will otherwise keep building without revisiting the plan. Let rest be allowed instead of earned. And take the Jupiter the old tradition puts here as permission: some of what you are building is meant to be enjoyed, and enjoying it early does not put the structure at risk.
Questions to sit with
- What is the work actually for, and is that answer still true?
- What would you have to finish before you would allow yourself a day off?
- What have you deferred so long you might not know how to take it?
