The second decan of Scorpio
The middle ten degrees of Scorpio, where the sign's depth turns toward something beyond the visible.
The technical picture
- Degrees
- 10 to 20 degrees of Scorpio
- Sun here roughly
- November 1 to November 11. The boundary shifts by about a day with the leap cycle, so a birthday within a day of either end needs a calculated chart.
- Sign ruler
- Mars, over all three decans
- Traditional face ruler
- Sun, from the Chaldean order
- Modern triplicity ruler
- Jupiter, by way of Pisces
- Do they agree
- No. The two traditions disagree here, as they do on twenty-seven of the thirty-six decans.
The core of this decan
Depth here starts reaching past what can be verified. Pisces colors these degrees, and the effect is that Scorpio's investigative pull turns metaphysical: the question stops being what is really going on in this room and becomes what is really going on at all. Planets here are drawn to the hidden in a wider sense, and often to art, ritual, or whatever else operates below the level of explanation.
How it differs from the rest of the sign
The opening decan of Scorpio confronts what is in front of it. This one is looking past it. That makes the second decan the least combative of the three and the most easily misread, since the same intensity is present and it is not aimed at anybody. Against the third decan, which pulls back toward family and attachment, this one is the least personal and the most likely to be genuinely solitary.
The two rulers
The traditions disagree usefully here. Modern practice gives these degrees to Jupiter, through Pisces, which accounts for the reach and the faith. The face system gives them to the Sun. That Sun keeps the decan from dissolving: it says there is a self at the center of the searching, and it explains why people with planets here tend to hold their private convictions with a good deal more certainty than they let on.
Where the friction is
A search that does not have to land can go on indefinitely. A planet in these degrees can pursue depth for its own sake and mistake the pursuit for arrival, and the intensity makes the pursuit feel productive whether or not it is. Escapism sits close by. The pull toward the transcendent and the pull away from an ordinary difficult afternoon are not always distinguishable from inside.
Working with it
Ground it in a practice rather than a mood, since a practice can be checked and a mood cannot. It helps to ask, of any deep pursuit, whether it is taking you toward something or away from something, and to accept that the answer is sometimes both. And keep one thing in the week that is entirely ordinary and has to be done on time.
Questions to sit with
- Is what you are searching for taking you toward something, or away from something?
- Which of your private convictions have you never said out loud?
- What in your week is ordinary, scheduled, and has to happen on time?
